Carnival Breaks Ground on New Bahamas Cruise Port

Carnival Cruise Line has broken ground on a brand new cruise port on Grand Bahama Island.

Carnival and the Bahamian government first announced the project in 2017, but it was pushed back due to damage from Hurricane Dorian and then the COVID-19 pandemic.

The 369 acre property is located 20 miles east of Freeport, and will include a pier capable of docking two Excel-class ships at once — Carnival’s largest vessels to date.

The port will include Bahamian operated shops and restaurants, as well as a nature reserve. As part of the agreement, Carnival will preserve 1/3 of the property by leaving it undeveloped.

Rotterdam Extends Charter of Holland America Ship

The city of Rotterdam, Netherlands has extended its charter of Holland America’s ship Volendam.

The vessel has been home to around 1,200 Ukrainians since docking in the city early last month as part of the Dutch government’s commitment to accommodate 50,000 people who fled the war in Ukraine.

The charter was originally scheduled through the end of June, but has now been extended through September 14. Under the agreement, Holland America is providing refugees with hot meals, housekeeping services, laundry, use of public spaces, and internet access.

Due to the extended charter, six additional cruises have been canceled on Volendam. The ship is now scheduled to reenter passenger service on September 24th.
